Courtyard Transformation - St Patrick’s Boys National School

Schools-Grass-StPatricks-Donabate

Some schoolyards do the job. Others go a step further. Before this project, the courtyard at St. Patrick’s Boys National School in Donabate was a traditional concrete space. Solid. Reliable. But ultimately limited. It offered durability, not engagement. Function, not fun.

And when you think about how valuable break time is in a school day, that’s a missed opportunity. This project wasn’t just about replacing a surface. It was about reimagining how that space could be used - by students and teachers alike.

Having previously completed a smaller section for the school, the team returned to deliver a full courtyard transformation.

The objective was simple: create a space that is colourful, safe, and genuinely interactive. Something that works every day, in all conditions, and stands up to constant use. Because in a school environment, “looks good” isn’t enough. It has to last. And it has to perform.

From Plain to Playable

The difference is immediate.

Where there was once a flat expanse of concrete, there is now a vibrant, multi-use play space filled with colour and purpose. The transformation doesn’t rely on one feature - it’s a combination of elements working together.

Large, bold squares in yellow, orange, pink, blue, and black are spread throughout the courtyard. These create natural gathering points, not just for play, but for structure. Teachers can use them to organise students at the end of break time, turning what was once an open, undefined space into something far more manageable.

Around these, smaller orange boxes are dotted across the surface. Simple in design, but surprisingly versatile. They invite creativity. They encourage movement. And importantly, they leave room for children to invent their own games.

The addition of colourful playsquares and hopscotch markings brings an immediate sense of familiarity. These are the kinds of games that don’t need explaining. They’re instinctive. Children see them - and they start playing.

Thoughtful Layout, Real Function

This isn’t just a collection of bright colours placed randomly.

A line of red artificial grass runs through the courtyard, subtly dividing different zones. It helps guide how the space is used, without restricting it. There’s still freedom, but now there’s also flow.

A section of blue artificial grass leads toward a doorway, helping to direct movement in a natural, unobtrusive way. It’s a small detail, but one that contributes to how the space works during busy periods.

Everything has been considered. Not just how it looks, but how it’s used.

Built for the Reality of School Life

School surfaces take a beating. There’s no getting around that. Hundreds of students. Daily use. Running, jumping, constant movement. Add in Irish weather, and it’s a tough environment for any surface to hold up in. That’s why durability was a key part of this installation.

The artificial grass used is specifically designed for heavy, everyday foot traffic. It maintains its structure and appearance over time, even with consistent use. No wearing down into patches. No muddy areas forming after a few months.

It’s built to last - not just through one school year, but many.

Safety Comes Standard

One of the biggest upgrades in this project isn’t immediately visible, but it makes a real difference. This is a hard surface installation with an integrated shockpad layer beneath the artificial grass.

On a traditional concrete yard, falls are part of the experience - and usually not a pleasant one. Scraped hands, bumped knees, the kind of minor injuries that happen all too often. The addition of shockpad changes that.

It provides a softer, more forgiving surface, helping to absorb impact and reduce the severity of falls. It gives children the confidence to play freely, without the same level of risk that comes with harder surfaces.

Less hesitation. Fewer knocks. More freedom to move.

More Than Just a Visual Upgrade

Yes, the courtyard looks completely different. Brighter. More welcoming. More alive.

But the real success of this project is in how it transforms the way the space is used. There are now defined areas for different types of play. Spaces for structured games, and spaces for imagination. Areas where students can gather, reset, and transition back into the school day more smoothly.

It supports both play and organisation - which, in a busy school environment, is no small thing.

A Space Designed for Students

At its core, this project is about giving students a space that works for them.

A space that encourages activity. That supports creativity. That makes break time feel like a genuine break - not just time spent standing around.

And for teachers, it offers something just as valuable: structure within that freedom. A way to manage and organise without needing to constantly intervene.

It’s a balance. And when it’s done right, it shows.

Thinking About Upgrading Your School?

If your school is still working with a traditional concrete yard, it’s worth asking what more that space could offer.

Because with the right design and the right materials, it can become something far more engaging, more functional, and safer for everyday use.

At SchoolsGrass.ie, the focus is on creating outdoor spaces that work in real school environments - durable, low-maintenance, and designed around how students actually play and move.

From full courtyard transformations to targeted upgrades, every project is tailored to the needs of the school.
