The site presented its challenges. The existing tarmacadam surface was uneven, which made safety and drainage key considerations from the outset. Rather than starting from scratch, the SchoolsGrass team designed a solution that worked with the existing structure.
A foam underlay system was installed - adding an important layer of impact protection beneath the grass and ensuring a softer, safer surface for play.
Once the groundwork was prepared, the transformation began.
Unlike many single-yard projects, Belgrove’s playground was spread across several distinct areas - each with its own purpose, design and character, yet all visually connected through consistent use of bright colours and durable artificial grass.
The main courtyard is the standout feature. Around its perimeter runs a red and blue walking/running track, giving pupils space to move, race, or simply walk and chat during breaks. The centre area bursts with life thanks to a variety of games and interactive designs - including PlaySquares, hopscotch grids, colourful circles, and a striking compass motif that adds both visual impact and educational value. Every shape, colour and layout choice was intentional, encouraging both physical activity and imaginative play.
Off this main courtyard, a series of secondary sections complete the transformation. One smaller area features ramps surfaced in red artificial grass, leading safely up to room entrances - a design touch that makes transitions between levels smooth, slip-resistant and visually engaging.
Another courtyard was given a second running and walking track, also in red and blue, as well as colourful class assembly points. This area not only supports physical activity but also adds organisation and structure to daily routines - teachers and pupils now have defined spaces for line-ups, drills and outdoor lessons.
And perhaps the most unique feature? A full outdoor chessboard, created using alternating black and white artificial grass tiles. It’s a bold and playful design that captures attention immediately - perfect for encouraging strategy, teamwork and problem-solving outdoors.
Every detail of the Belgrove project ties back to the school’s original vision: to make playtime safer, more active and more inclusive.
The foam underlay beneath every section ensures a soft, forgiving surface - far kinder than hard tarmac for inevitable slips and falls. The artificial grass finish not only brings colour and warmth but also allows the space to be used year-round. Unlike traditional surfaces that become slippery or waterlogged, the new play areas are ready to use quickly after rain, keeping outdoor time consistent and reliable - even in Irish weather.
The vibrant markings and activity zones were chosen to give students a mix of structured and open-ended play opportunities. Whether it’s running laps, jumping between shapes, playing hopscotch, or gathering for class outdoors, every child now has something that sparks movement and creativity.
The transformation has had a clear impact on daily school life. The once dull, uneven surface is now a bright, multi-functional playground that supports everything from physical education to creative play. It’s a space that feels alive - full of energy, colour and movement - and one that perfectly reflects Belgrove’s commitment to their pupils’ well-being.
Teachers have noted how the new environment naturally encourages students to move more during break times. With so many different games, zones and markings, there’s always something to do and somewhere new to explore. The clear assembly areas also help with school routines, making line-ups and outdoor gatherings easier to manage.
For the pupils, though, the difference is simpler - their yard is finally fun.
Just like every SchoolsGrass installation, durability was a top priority. The artificial grass products used at Belgrove are engineered for high-traffic use, designed to handle hundreds of students playing on them every day without wearing down or flattening. Combined with the protective foam layer underneath, Belgrove’s playground is built to perform - day in, day out - whatever the weather.
The Belgrove Senior Girls’ project shows what’s achievable when creativity meets practicality. By reimagining existing hard surfaces rather than replacing them, SchoolsGrass delivered a full playground transformation that was both cost-effective and sustainable.
The result? A safe, colourful, activity-based playground that supports learning, socialising, and play - every day of the year.
